SALT Triage Training
The MT-501i was developed by TACDA/METTAG in cooperation with The Mayo Clinic and Gold Cross Ambulance. It is designed to support the SALT (Sort, Assess, Lifesaving Interventions, Treatment/Transport) triage system used during mass casualty incidents.
The tag follows triage guidelines recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As a result, students and responders can practice rapid patient assessment and triage decision-making using the same format found on the operational MT-501 tag.
How SALT Triage Works
Sort
First, separate patients based on their ability to walk, respond to commands, or move on their own.
Assess
Next, check each patient for life-threatening injuries. Then record findings using the simple check boxes and assessment areas on the tag.
Lifesaving Interventions
If needed, provide lifesaving care such as opening an airway, controlling severe bleeding, giving rescue breaths, or administering medication. At the same time, trainees can select the proper triage category using the color-coded tear-off sections.
Treatment and Transport
After assessment and lifesaving care are complete, patients can be prioritized according to their level of need. The MT-501i uses the following SALT categories:
- Immediate (Red)
- Delayed (Yellow)
- Minimal (Green)
- Expectant (Gray)
- Dead (Black)
Designed for Realistic Training
The MT-501i helps first responders, CERT teams, hospitals, schools, and emergency management organizations conduct realistic mass casualty exercises while keeping training costs low.
By using the same assessment fields, triage categories, and tear-off system as the operational MT-501, participants gain valuable hands-on experience that translates directly to real-world emergency response.
Please Note: The MT-501i is intended for training and exercise use only. Barcode numbers are non-functional and are provided for simulation purposes.
